Product Description

A beautifully detailed, cast pewter St. Benedict medal. Benedict (whose name means "blessed") is the patron saint of civil engineers, farmers, monks and those in religious orders, and spelunkers. He is considered to be the founder of western monasticism.

This striking medal is a reproduction of the "jubilee" medal first struck in 1880 to commemorate the 1400th anniversary of Benedict's birth. This medal has an amazing amount of detail on both sides. The front features the figure of St. Benedict flanked by the words "CRVX S PATRIS BENEDICTI" (the Cross of holy Father Benedict) and the words "EIVS IN ORBITU NRO PRAE SENTIA MUNIAMUR" (May his presence protect us at the hour of our death) in the outer band, and bright cut accents. The reverse carries a series of letters representing Latin mottos: CSPB (the Cross of holy Father Benedict), CSSML (May the Holy Cross be my Light), NDSMD (Let not the dragon be my guide), and VRSNSMVSMQLIVB (Begone Satan! Suggest not vain things to me. Evil is the cup thou offerest; drink thou thine own poison).

This medal measures 1-1/16" in diameter and hangs from a 24" stainless steel endless chain.
